How police recovered $16k painting stolen from California hospital

Police recovered a $16,000 painting March 18 that had been swiped from San Jose, Calif.-based Santa Clara Valley Medical Center three days prior, according to NBC Bay Area.

The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office tweeted a photo March 15 of an unidentified suspect walking out of the hospital with the painting in hand. On March 17, police announced they had arrested Francisco Romero, 39, for the theft. However, the painting had yet to be found.

Police experienced a breakthrough in the case when they received a tip and recovered the artwork in good condition March 18, according to the report. Additional details regarding the artwork's recovery were not immediately available.

Christopher Wilder, CEO of the Valley Medical Center Foundation, which raises funds for the hospital, said the painting will be placed back in its original spot in the hospital, and additional measures will be taken to better protect the painting.

"That's never happened before for me," Nick Gentry, the artist behind the artwork, told NBC Bay Area. "The first time this happens, you expect it to be from somewhere like a gallery or maybe somebody's apartment, but actually from a hospital was shocking."
