Florida hospital shuttered by Hurricane Irma to be demolished by summer 2019

A Florida hospital closed since 2017 after sustaining damage from Hurricane Irma will be demolished, according to the Daytona Beach News-Journal.

Florida Hospital Oceanside in Ormond Beach, part of Orlando-based Florida Hospital, was put up for sale Oct. 19. The hospital also sustained damage from Hurricane Matthew in 2016. After Irma pummeled the facility last year, the initial plan was to reopen the hospital after 18 months, but the wind and water damage was too great.

Workers will begin to demolish the 80-bed hospital Jan. 7, but the demolition likely won’t be complete until the summer, a hospital spokesperson told the News-Journal.

"The entire razing process is expected to take several months and should be completed by summer 2019," the spokesperson said. "We've developed an environmentally conscientious plan to ensure recyclable items stay out of landfills and are repurposed when possible."
