Carthage (N.Y.) Area Hospital is seeking money to build a $65 million replacement hospital and attached rural health center, according to a WWNY-TV report.
Renovation of the current hospital, built in 1962, would cost about $44 million and interrupt services, hospital officials said.
"When we weigh all the facts and costs of renovating versus new construction, the latter delivers the best return for our patients and region," Rich Duvall, CarthageAreaHospital's CEO said.
To fund the new facility, hospital officials are not only seeking $25 million from the New York Health Department; they also seek a rural hospital designation. If the project proceeds, Carthage Area Hospital would repurpose buildings at its existing campus or donate the buildings.
The hospital is evaluating potential sites for the new campus.
