University of California San Francisco is conducting a study involving use of its EHR to manage weight loss in the first dew days of a newborn's life.
The Healthy Start study aims to offer decision support to healthcare providers regarding newborn weight loss patterns. For the study, researchers have integrated the Newborn Weight Tool into UCSF's Epic EHR and automated data collection using an external integration platform.
The Newborn Weight Tool is a web-based application that gives clinicians hour-by-hour newborn weight loss nomograms.
UCSF is enrolling all healthy newborns in the study. Each newborn's EHR displays the NEWT nomogram automatically with pre-populated weight values, allowing clinicians to make decisions quickly and efficiently without leaving the EHR.
"We hope the study will improve decision-making about whether supplemental feeding or other interventions might be warranted," said Valerie Flaherman, MD, an associate professor of pediatrics at UCSF and lead author of the study.
