Next DOD site, Madigan Army Medical Center, to deploy Cerner EHR

Tacoma, Wash.-based Madigan Army Medical Center will go live on the U.S. Department of Defense's EHR system, called MHS Genesis, Oct. 21, according to The Northwest Guardian.

MHS Genesis is built on a commercial platform developed by Cerner as part of a $4.3 billion DOD contract awarded to Leidos, Cerner and Accenture in July 2015. The EHR deployment will follow a "wave model," ultimately replacing all of the DOD's legacy healthcare systems, which encompass more than 9.4 million beneficiaries.

Fairchild Air Force Base outside Spokane, Wash., was the first facility to implement the new EHR as part of the MHS Genesis project in February. Madigan Army Medical Center is part of the next implementation wave, which includes two additional facilities in Washington state.

In the weeks following the go-live, Madigan Army Medical Center officials will reduce outpatient appointments to help ease staff into the new system. Officials also expect wait times at the facility's lab and pharmacy to increase during the adjustment period, according to The Northwest Guardian.

The DOD plans to continue with 23 waves across three continental U.S. regions and two regions overseas through 2022. The typical wave will include three hospitals and 15 physical locations and will last for roughly one year.
