National Academy of Medicine releases ONC-funded report on improving clinical decision support

Jessica Kim Cohen -

The National Academy of Medicine published a report titled "Optimizing Strategies for Clinical Decision Support."

For the report, funded by the ONC, the NAM Leadership Consortium for a Value & Science-Driven Health System convened a series of three meetings in March 2016, October 2016 and February 2017 with healthcare industry leaders to identify key priorities to improve clinical decision support.

"Despite its potential, CDS implementation and actualization remain nascent due to the many barriers to realizing the full benefits of CDS-facilitated value improvement," the report reads, naming challenges such as lack of reliable clinical decision support content and suboptimal user interfaces.

The report outlines themes that emerged during the three meetings, including emergent clinical decision support practices, a roadmap for national action on clinical decision support and strategies to accelerate clinical decision support adoption.
