Mayo's Rochester campus readies for May 5 go-live on Epic

Mayo Clinic's main campus in Rochester, Minn., is slated to implement an Epic EHR May 5, a Mayo Clinic spokesperson confirmed to Becker's Hospital Review May 1.

Mayo Clinic plans to implement a single Epic EHR to replace the three EHR systems in use across the health system by the end of 2018, ABC 6 News reports. The first site of Mayo Clinic's systemwide rollout deployed the Epic EHR at La Crosse, Wis.-based Mayo Clinic Health System-Franciscan Healthcare in July 2017. The Arizona and Florida campuses will go live in the fall of 2018.

Internally, the project is nicknamed the "Plummer Project," in reference to Henry Plummer, MD, who Mayo Clinic credits with creating the first unified health record at the health system more than a century ago.

"Before this project went live, it involved really two and a half years of planning," Richard Helmers, MD, regional vice president of the Mayo Clinic's northwest Wisconsin region, told ABC 6 News. "People from all the campuses throughout Mayo were meeting for a week a month in Rochester for a long time to design the electronic medical records."

The systemwide Epic implementation is part of a multiyear technology modernization project across Mayo Clinic, which officials estimate encompasses $1.5 billion worth of investments.
