Large hospitals more likely to use Cerner, small hospitals opt for Epic: 4 report insights

Julie Spitzer -

With 17 percent of the global market share, Cerner is the most used EMR, according to Kalorama Information's annual EMR industry report.

For its report, EMR 2018: The Market for Electronic Medical Records, Kalorama analyzed the global EMR market and the trends affecting it through a statistical review of industry influences, demographics, life expectancy and company strategies.

Here are four things to know.

1. While Cerner holds the highest market share at 17.3 percent, Epic follows at 8.8 percent and Allscripts trails at 6.1 percent. GE Healthcare came in fourth place.

2. The overall EMR industry is segmented into large health systems and smaller hospitals and large physician practices. Cerner is the more popular vendor among large health systems, but smaller hospitals and large physician practices tend to use Epic.

3. "There are many EMR providers, so it's important to look at where they operate," said Mary Anne Crandall, the report's author. "In the competition for large healthcare systems, it's the top four EMR companies [Cerner, Epic, Allscripts, GE Healthcare] mainly participating with some exceptions. If you focus on small hospitals, you've got Cerner and Epic but also Meditech is a factor. When it's physician practices, you see Epic and Allscripts but also NextGen, athenahealth, eClinicalWorks, NueMD — a lot of competitors."

4. In the last year, vendor growth was driven by acquisitions, the addition of new features and the expansion of pre-existing services.
