HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 hospitals more likely to report physician satisfaction with EMRs, survey finds

Hospitals that earned Stage 7 on the HIMSS Analytics EMR Adoption Model are more likely to report physician satisfaction with the systems, according to a report from KLAS Research and HIMSS Analytics.

HIMSS Analytics, a subsidiary of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, uses the EMR Adoption Model to determine the extent to which a hospital has adopted various EMR capabilities. The model runs from Stage 0 to Stage 7, with Stage 7 representing the highest designation.

To assess whether the eight-stage model is indicative of physicians' experiences with the software, KLAS Research and HIMSS Analytics analyzed whether hospitals that have strong EMR adoption — those at Stage 7 — are more likely to have physicians who report user satisfaction with the EMR.

The analysis found hospitals at Stage 7 were more likely to provide an above average EMR user experience.

Physicians at these hospitals were more likely to agree with statements that the EMR "enables me to deliver high-quality healthcare," "has the needed functionality," "provides the expected integration within our organization" or "provides the expected integration with outside organizations."

However, physicians at Stage 7 hospitals were not significantly more likely than those at Stage 6 hospitals to agree with statements that the EMR "enables efficient care," "is easy to learn," "has the reporting and analytics I need" or "enables me to deliver patient-centered care."

"To most organizations, EMRAM Stage 7 feels like an incredible mountain to climb — and it is," the report concludes. "However, EMRAM Stage 7 isn't the peak, but rather an important milestone on the journey toward revolutionizing the delivery of healthcare."
