Here's 1 way the VA will help patients access data during its 10-year EHR transition

The U.S. Digital Service is helping the Department of Veterans Affairs ensure a seamless transition to its Cerner EHR, according to the Politico Morning eHealth newsletter.

The U.S. Digital Service is a collaborative team that works to improve federal agencies' websites and technology infrastructure. It emerged out of the White House's troubled rollout of HealthCare.gov in 2013.

The U.S. Digital Service is largely staying separate from the VA's $10 billion, 10-year EHR implementation, which will transition the agency's patient records from its homegrown VistA EHR to a Cerner system. However, U.S. Digital Service staff told Politico the team will help build a user interface for veterans that will hopefully prevent any glitches veterans may face during the EHR transition.

The interface layer will allow veterans seeking health information during the 10-year transitional period to access their patient records, without needing to know which EHR currently houses their data.
