Google's Care Studio, an EHR search tool, unveiled Oct. 17 that is launching a mobile app for clinicians.

Five things to know:

  1. Clinicians can use the Care Studio app to look at patients' medical records. Clinicians can view physician notes, lab results and check on a patient's progress from a smartphone from a hospital corridor, a patient's bedside and other locations.

  2. The app is designed to prevent clinicians from being overloaded with data on a small screen. It also summarizes what has changed since the last time the clinician viewed the chart.

  3. The app has a medical search engine to assist clinicians with navigating the data. It allows clinicians to enter a patient's name and pulls data from multiple EHRs.

  4. A patient's dashboard allows clinicians to view an overview of their allergies, medication, location and more. Health summaries have links clinicians can click to view a more detailed version of the information.

  5. Google has been piloting the Care Studio tool at St. Louis-based Ascension Health and Boston-based Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. The mobile app will soon be available for pilot programs at those health systems.
