Freshman lawmaker to oversee VA's Cerner transition

Julie Spitzer -

The House Veterans Affairs Committee selected Rep. Susie Lee, D-Nev., who took office less than a month ago, to oversee the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' $10 billion, 10-year EHR overhaul, according to Nextgov.

The freshman congresswoman will lead the Technology Modernization subcommittee, which was created last summer to help keep tabs on the VA's transition to a Cerner EHR.

"It is critical that those who have put their lives on the line for our country are given proper care quickly, which means modernizing the VA and investing in the right technology to do so," Ms. Lee said in a statement to Nextgov. "This subcommittee will make sure that the VA is doing this in the most effective way so that our veterans are cared for in a timely manner without abusing taxpayer dollars."

The subcommittee's Democratic members include Reps. Conor Lamb, Penn., Julia Brownley, Calif., and Joe Cunningham, S.C. House VA Ranking Member Rep. Phil Roe, R-Tenn., has yet to announce the group's Republican members.
