OpenNotes has added Karen DeSalvo, MD, former national coordinator for health IT, to its advisory board.

The advisory board provides guidance and counsel to support OpenNotes, an international movement that encourages healthcare providers to share clinical notes with patients through online patient portals. OpenNotes focuses on overcoming challenges patients may face when attempting to gain access to clinical notes, which they have a legal right to review under HIPAA.

Dr. DeSalvo, who served as the acting assistant secretary for health at HHS and national coordinator for health IT during the Obama administration, is now a professor of medicine and population health at the University of Texas at Austin's Dell Medical School.

"Almost 30 years ago I was introduced to the idea of open notes when I was a medical student and tried to practice with that in mind,” Dr. DeSalvo said in a June 1 statement. "I am excited about working with the OpenNotes team and leveraging this framework to spread meaningful consumer partnerships."
