DOD to deploy Cerner EHR at US Air Force base in September

Jackie Drees -

Fairfield, Calif.-based David Grant USAF Medical Center at Travis will go live on the Department of Defense's new Cerner-supported EHR in September.

The DOD began transitioning to the new Cerner EHR, called MHS Genesis, at four pilot locations in February 2017. The department then paused the project in January 2018 following clinician reports of workflow problems, such as issues with lab report requests. The operational issues have since been corrected, Navy Vice Admiral Raquel Bono said in a news release.

Under the new system, the DOD also aims to improve interoperability between the Department of Veterans Affairs, which is also transitioning to a Cerner EHR. MHS Genesis is a cloud-based system, which will allow providers at any military medical facility to access their patient's records from any other military hospital or medical clinic.

The new EHR system also includes a patient portal, which allows patients to access their health information, request prescription refills and view test and lab results.
