CMS exceeds year 1 QPP participation goal with 91% of eligible clinicians participating

CMS surpassed its year one goal for participation in the Quality Payment Program with 91 percent of clinicians eligible for its Merit-based Incentive Payment System participating, CMS Administrator Seema Verma wrote in an agency blog post.

Additionally, submission rates for ACOs were 98 percent and for rural practices, 94 percent.

CMS set  an internal goal of 90 percent participation from MIPS-eligible clinicians in the first year of QPP — which CMS dubbed the "pick your pace year" — and Ms. Verma praised participants for helping exceed the benchmark. "What makes these numbers most exciting is the concerted efforts by clinicians, professional associations, and many others to ensure high quality care and improved outcomes for patients," she wrote.

Ms. Verma also reiterated some of the steps CMS has taken to alleviate MIPS burdens:

  • Reduced the number of clinicians that are required to participate, affording them more time with their patients.
  • Added new bonus points for clinicians who are in small practices, treat complex patients, or use 2015 Edition Certified EHR Technology to promote health information interoperability.
  • Increased the opportunity for clinicians to earn a positive payment adjustment.
  • Continued offering free technical assistance to clinicians in the program.
