Cerner to take over IT department at Texas hospital

Julie Spitzer -

Cerner will take over the IT department at Medical Center Health System in Odessa, Texas, under an agreement the Ector County Hospital District board of directors approved Aug. 16, according to OA online.

Under the agreement, Cerner ITWorks will take on day-to-day management of MCHS' IT operations and staff, including its EHR.

The health system transitioned to Cerner's Millennium EHR in April 2017, and the project faced numerous challenges, with staff complaining of inadequate training. By outsourcing its IT department to Cerner, the hospital said it will be able to free up resources to drive efficiencies.

"This alignment will pair MCHS's high-quality care with Cerner's IT expertise to help us keep up with the rapid pace of healthcare innovation," Rick Napper, president and CEO of MCHS, said in a prepared statement obtained by OA online. "MCHS has cared for patients in the Permian Basin for over 68 years, and this alignment will help us continue to serve the region for many years to come."
