Cerner tech issues cause EHR downtime at Oxford University Hospitals

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust experienced EHR downtime on Jan. 28 due to technical issues with its Cerner system, The Herald reports.

The technical problems were not related to any cybersecurity issues, and the EHR downtime had no effect on the U.K.-based hospital network's other systems, Oxford University Hospitals said in a statement to The Herald.

"Tried and tested contingency plans were implemented in order to ensure continuity of care for our patients while Cerner resolved these technical issues," the statement said.

The technical issues were caused by routine system maintenance, and the system was back up and running within the same day.

"As part of routine system maintenance, a client experienced an issue that’s since been fully resolved. No other Cerner clients were involved or affected," a company spokesperson said in an emailed statement to Becker's Hospital Review.

As one of the U.K.'s largest academic teaching health systems, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust comprises four hospitals and 1,185 beds. For 2018-19, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust had 1.4 million patient contacts.
