Cerner names 5 finalists for EHR code app challenge

Jackie Drees -

Cerner announced Sept. 12 five finalists for its annual Code App Challenge, which encourages third-party developers to design applications to integrate with EHR systems to improve consumers' access to health information.

The finalists will develop working demonstrations of their app ideas with Cerner engineers in October during the EHR vendor's Health Conference and Code Learning Lab in Kansas City, Mo. The winner of the challenge will be announced in December and will receive a one-year membership to Cerner's code program. The app proposal will also be given the opportunity for validation and to be added to Cerner's code app gallery.

Here are the five finalists and their respective app proposals, in alphabetical order by organization:

1. Baystate Health (Springfield, Mass.). An app that uses a consumer's personal device to electronically receive, complete and transfer health questionnaires and forms between two parties, such as patient and provider.

2. Cerner ITWorks at Adventist Health (Roseville, Calif.). Powered by Cerner solutions and social determinants of health data, the app acts as a central hub for consumers' health information and uses machine learning to expand clinical decision systems and predictions.

3. Intelliaide (Pearland, Texas). A mobile platform that uses voice technology to help care givers and patients track and share patient-generated health data with family and providers in real time.

4. Mindset Medical (Phoenix). A mobile platform that triages a patient list based on various levels of back pain and spinal condition factors collected before, during and after patient visits.

5. Optimize (Seattle). An app that aggregates data from several Bluetooth and cellular-based remote patient monitoring devices to help coordinate equipment delivery to a patient's home and manage reimbursement under procedural terminology codes.
