Carequality might integrate FHIR interoperability standards

Jessica Kim Cohen -

Carequality, a national interoperability framework that helps providers connect with one another and exchange data, is considering adding support for Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources, another popular standards framework.

FHIR, developed by the nonprofit HL7, is one of the most common interoperability standards used for exchanging electronic data in the healthcare industry. Because FHIR is so widely used, Carequality is asking healthcare stakeholders — including those who are not members of Carequality — to comment on how it can incorporate FHIR standards into its existing framework.

Carequality is inviting healthcare stakeholders to participate in its FHIR implementation guide workgroups, which include workgroups focused on technical and policy considerations.

"Carequality has demonstrated the power of a nationwide governance framework in connecting health IT networks and services for clinical document exchange," Dave Cassel, executive director of Carequality, said in a news release. As of earlier this year, 600,000-plus physicians have used Carequality's framework to electronically exchange patient records.

"We're eager to engage with stakeholders to map out the details of FHIR-based exchange under Carequality’s governance model," he continued.
