Verona, Wis.-based Epic continued to grab the healthcare industry's attention this year.

1. Vanderbilt University Medical Center points to Epic rollout for 60% drop in operating income

Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt University Medical Center saw its revenues increase in the first nine months of fiscal year 2018, but the hospital ended the period with lower operating income, which it attributed — in part — to costs related to an Epic EHR implementation.

2. Fairview CEO bashes Epic, calls for march on Madison

James Hereford, president and CEO of Minneapolis-based Fairview Health Services, called Epic an "impediment to innovation" and told healthcare leaders they should exert more influence over the EHR giant.

3. Northwestern lays off 60 IT workers after Epic EHR rollout

Northwestern Medicine in Chicago laid off 60 IT staffers after it launched a new Epic health records system in March.

4. Vandals cause thousands of dollars in damage to one of Epic's buildings

An empty building owned by Epic was broken into in April, and vandals caused thousands of dollars in damages.

5. 'Epic is a better system' — Epic responds to Cerner's protest of U of Illinois' $62M EHR contract

Epic denied the main allegation in Cerner's protest that claimed there was a conflict of interest in the EHR contracting process at the Chicago-based University of Illinois Health, which awarded Epic a $62 million, seven-year deal in late 2017 to overhaul its health records.
