Allscripts backs HHS final interoperability rules

Jackie Drees -

Allscripts on March 12 announced its "full support" of HHS' final interoperability rules, which were released earlier this week.

The two rules, issued by ONC and CMS in February 2019, will require the health IT industry to adopt standardized application programming interfaces so patients can freely access their health data from third-party apps via smartphone. The rules also address information blocking practices, requiring that providers or hospitals that unreasonably limit the availability of EHR information be publicly reported.

Allscripts highlighted the rules' information blocking provisions, which the EHR vendor has advocated for in the past, according to the news release. Allscripts currently offers open platforms that patients and clients can use to manage personal health data.

"At Allscripts, we fully support the new HHS interoperability final rules, as we have always believed that patient information belongs to the patient," said Paul Black, CEO of Allscripts. "Data interoperability has always been a top priority for us, and we have applications in production that align with the new rules, specifically around patient engagement. We are excited to lead in this new era of open healthcare information sharing."

The company's personal health record and population health platform FollowMyHealth is just one of Allscripts' various interoperability solutions, which are implemented at facilities ranging from independent physician practices, multispecialty clinics and community hospitals.
