7 alerts, tools that hospitals are adding to their EHRs

Here are seven alerts and tools that hospitals and health systems have recently developed and added to their EHR systems.

1. Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins Medicine deployed an algorithm alert system that analyzes patients' EHR data to help identify individuals at risk of sepsis.

2. The Pediatric Physicians' Organization at Boston Children's Hospital is expanding its medical home asthma program, which uses EHR data to help identify and alert clinicians of children at risk of asthma.

3. Salt Lake City-based Intermountain Healthcare researchers designed a computer algorithm that integrates with patients' EHRs to help determine an individual's risk for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

4. University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine researchers studied EHR data and developed an algorithm that identifies and assigns patients into four separate categories of sepsis.

5. Boston Medical Center implemented an EHR-based tool that serves as a social determinants of health screener to identify patients' unmet needs.

6. University of Arizona in Phoenix researchers received a $766,000 grant to develop alerts within an EHR system that notify physicians when a prescription drug may put a patient at risk of cardiac arrhythmia.

7. Charleston-based Medical University of South Carolina researchers developed a digital messaging tool that allows patients to send radiologists questions about imaging results within the EHR.
