50% of hospital execs who moved to athenahealth's EHR report improved usability, KLAS finds

Jessica Kim Cohen -

Fifty percent of respondents from facilities that recently went live on an athenahealth EHR indicated the system helped their facility improve usability or workflow, according to a KLAS Research report.

For the report, KLAS interviewed 20 executives, IT leaders and end-users from eight community hospitals that converted to the athenahealth EHR after athenahealth acquired cloud-based EHR provider RazorInsights in 2015.

Respondents from the eight hospitals also cited smaller IT footprint (15 percent), vendor collaboration (15 percent), improved internal reporting (10 percent) and smooth implementation (10 percent) as successes attributed to the transition to athenahealth's EHR.

The primary challenges respondents indicated with the EHR system comprised pharmacy (50 percent), nursing workflows (30 percent) and overall "newness" of athenahealth to hospitals (20 percent), among other functionality gaps.
