25% of community hospitals evaluating cloud-based EHR replacements, survey finds

More than a quarter of hospitals under 150 beds are in the process of assessing cloud-based replacement systems for their EHRs, according to a recent Black Book report.

For its Q1 2020 user survey, Black Book asked more than 700 community, rural and critical access hospitals about their EHR and cloud-based systems.

Of the participants, 448 currently use an EHR system in their respective hospitals, 247 are evaluating an EHR implementation and 55 are currently implementing a replacement cloud-based EHR system.

When asked why they would move to an integrated/outpatient/physician practice cloud-based platform, survey participants said to: 

· Improve hospital finances, collections and concerns: 93 percent
· Free up limited resources from EHR operations: 90 percent
· Improve physician satisfaction and usability: 85 percent
· Improve employee satisfaction and usability: 81 percent
· Support interoperability and data sharing between non-affiliated providers and payers: 80 percent
· Improve data security: 30 percent
· Improve clinical outcomes: 30 percent
· Improve patient experience: 19 percent
· Improve disaster recovery: 17 percent
· Improve application management: 11 percent
· Prepare for value-based care reimbursement: 10 percent
· Improve access to analytics: 10 percent
