Eastern Niagara Hospital in Lockport, N.Y., plans to triple the size of its emergency department as part of an $8.2 million project announced Wednesday, according to The Buffalo News.
The ED will be the ground floor of a two-story structure constructed near the hospital's entrance. The second floor will include physicians' offices and outpatient mental health facilities.
Eastern Niagara must still receive formal approval from the New York State Health Department, said Carolyn Moore, director of community relations at Eastern Niagara Hospital.
Building plans for the ED, which will cover more than 10,000 square feet, call for 16 treatment rooms with more privacy for patients and space designated for orthopedics, trauma and child psychiatric evaluations.
The 21,000-square-foot building is expected to break ground in late 2018 and would take approximately one year to finish.
The hospital has not decided on how to reuse the current 3,800-square-foot ED on the ground floor of the 134-bed hospital, Ms. Moore added.
