Virginia hospital finishes $12M freestanding ER

Megan Knowles -

LewisGale Medical Center in Salem, Va., is opening a freestanding emergency room on Tuesday to reduce overcrowding in the main hospital's emergency department, according to The Roanoke Times.

The $12 million facility has eight private treatment rooms, a secure area for behavioral health patients, a decontamination zone and a pressurized room to treat potentially infectious patients. The ER will also have diagnostic and lab services, laboratory and imaging services and equipment to handle eye injuries and emergency deliveries of babies.

The 10,000-square-foot building will be staffed by board-certified ER physicians and nurses. The building is an extension of the existing LewisGale hospital, and ambulances will transfer patients who require surgery or admission to the new facility.
