University of Chicago completes $39M ED for adults

Megan Knowles -

The University of Chicago Medicine completed its $39 million advanced adult emergency department.

UChicago celebrated the facility's completion Dec. 5 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and community tours of the ED.

The ED will include features to reduce wait times and accommodate growing demand, along with more space to serve critically ill patients, such as those who suffer a stroke or heart attack.

"The new ED is essential to offering adult trauma care, since it is the primary entry point for trauma patients, who must be stabilized before being moved to other areas of the Medical Center for additional medical care," said Kenneth Polonsky, MD, executive vice president for medical affairs at UChicago.

The adult ED is part of a larger $269 million project, which includes the construction of a Level 1 adult trauma center in Chicago's South Side and the redevelopment of UChicago's Mitchell Hospital as a dedicated cancer care facility.

The ED is set to open Dec. 29.
