Megan Knowles -

Greer, S.C.-based Pelham Medical Center is building a $33.5 million expansion of the hospital's emergency and surgery center, which is scheduled to be finished next year, according to a Spartanburg Herald-Journal report.

Here are five things to know about the expansion.

1. The 55,000-square-foot, multi-floor expansion is expected to be completed by spring 2019, according to officials from Spartanburg (S.C.) Regional Healthcare System, which owns the 48-bed hospital.

2. The expansion will increase the department's number of beds from 14 to 28 and add nine patient observation beds.

3. The expanded emergency department will have MRI equipment, since patients who need MRIs are currently transported to a separate building.

4. The ED saw around 60 patients daily five years ago, but now sees over 100 patients a day, said Tony Kouskolekas, Pelham Medical Center's president. Mr. Kouskolekas expects the number of daily ED visits to continue to increase.

5. The expansion will add 50 employees, according to Mr. Kouskolekas.
