Minnesota hospital unveils $6M ER expansion

Avera Marshall (Minn.) Regional Medical Center is doubling the size of its emergency department in response to increased patient volume, according to a Marshall Independent report.

The hospital's emergency patient volume has increased from fewer than 4,900 annually in the 1990s to 7,800 in 2016. The emergency care facilities haven't been renovated since 1997, said Timothy Hindbjorgen, MD, medical director of Avera Marshall's ED.

Avera Marshall has also grown to have a larger service area, as it is the only hospital with a Level 3 trauma designation for 60 miles, Dr. Hindbjorgen added.

The $6 million ED expansion includes a new layout with private patient care rooms built around a central staff area, said Kevin Schroeder, facilities director at Avera Marshall. The expansion project will house 10 patient care rooms and two trauma care rooms, as well as increase ED security measures and build a new drive-through ambulance garage.

Construction is planned to begin in January and finish by spring 2019.
