Active shooter simulations improve ED nurse preparedness, survey finds

Megan Knowles -

Active shooter training and simulations show promise in properly equipping emergency room nurses and other hospital staff members, survey results published in the Journal of Emergency Nursing revealed.

Of 202 emergency nurses and ancillary staff members who participated in active shooter training, 92 percent said they felt better prepared to respond if a shooting happened at their facility, the survey found. The survey also found 70 percent of participants reported an increase in knowledge and readiness.

The Emergency Nurses Association is offering several opportunities for emergency nurses to participate in readiness courses and activities at an emergency nurses conference Sept. 26-29 in Pittsburgh.
