Google Health finalized its complete acquisition of DeepMind, a U.K. startup the tech giant acquired for more than $500 million in 2014, according to a blog post by Google Health U.K. site lead Dr. Dominic King.
Here are four things to know:
1. Throughout the last few years, DeepMind has been focused on developing artificial intelligence research and mobile tools to improve patient care and clinician workflows.
2. By being completely under Google, DeepMind will leverage the company's global expertise in app development, data security, cloud storage and user-centered design.
3. Within the U.K., DeepMind has formed partnerships with various academic medical centers and national health foundations. The company has also worked the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to improve the detection of patient deterioration.
4. Dr. King understands that a transition like this will take time. DeepMind is giving power to its partners to ask questions and to choose if they want to continue collaborating.
