Andrew Moore, PhD, dean of the school of computer science at Pittsburgh-based Carnegie Mellon University, will leave his role at the university to head up Google Cloud's artificial intelligence efforts full-time at the end of 2018.
Google Cloud's AI group offers the company's vision, language, speech and conversation products related to AI on its cloud platform. The group has also built a platform for its customers to build and scale their own AI models on Google Cloud.
"We are incredibly fortunate to have Andrew's leadership at this point in our development as we define how we will expand bringing AI and [machine learning] technologies and solutions to developers and organizations all over the world," Diane Green, CEO of Google Cloud, wrote in a company blog post Sept. 10.
Dr. Moore will advise the AI group through the end of the year. His position at the company marks a return, as Dr. Moore previously worked at Google as a vice president of engineering from 2006 to 2014.
"I have always deeply believed in the power of technology to improve the state of the world, so for me it's a big opportunity to help Google bring useful AI to all the other industry verticals," Dr. Moore said in the company blog post.
Dr. Moore will replace Fei-Fei Li, PhD, an associate professor in the computer science department at Stanford University in California, as the lead on Google Cloud's AI group. Dr. Li went on leave from Stanford University to join Google Cloud in late 2016, and will resume her post at the university at the end of the year.
Dr. Li will transition to serving as an AI and machine learning advisor for Google Cloud after Dr. Moore begins his post.
"What I have learned by working in the industry will strengthen further collaborations between academia and industry going forward," Dr. Li said in the blog post. "I look forward to working closely with Andrew and the Google Cloud AI teams to continue this collaboration."
