Texas medical school launches innovation platform targeting underserved patients

Researchers at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas Austin are testing a patient engagement platform to make health information easily accessible and portable.

With a two-year, $1 million award from HHS’ Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, Dell Medical School is focusing its efforts on populations that are excluded during technology development and/or clinical research.

The platform gives patients the opportunity to more easily talk to providers. Additionally, Dell Medical School created the app with the number of logins a patient would have to complete in mind.

“We aim to create a standardized way for patients to use just one platform that allows them to retrieve and let third parties view their health records securely and through privacy ensuring technology, regardless of which portals their doctors might use,” Anjum Khurshid, MD, PhD, director of data integration within Dell Medical School’s population health department.

Dr. Khurshid and his team are gathering feedback from underserved populations, including ethnic minority patients and patients suffering with chronic medical conditions. With the data, researchers will be able to alter and create different user experiences based on the varying degrees of health literacy.

The grant was part of the HHS Leading Edge Acceleration Projects in Health Information Technology, which aims to boost the development of technology designed to improve healthcare through the interoperability of EHRs.
