Stanford innovation lab, Pinterest launch mental health search tool

Pinterest is rolling out new capabilities on its mobile app to provide users with stress relief and self-compassion exercises based on their search history.

The emotional well-being activities were developed in partnership with Stanford University's Brainstorm lab for mental health innovation. If a Pinterest user searches on the app for terms such as "stress quotes" or "work anxiety," for example, they may be prompted to try a deep breathing or meditation activity to relieve stress, anxiety and sadness and improve their overall mood.

Users will also be directed to relevant resources, such as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, should their search queries indicate that they need more urgent help. All interactions with the activities and resources are stored anonymously and kept separate from a user's Pinterest account to protect privacy.
