Shriners Hospitals launches genomics institute for precision medicine

Shriners Hospitals for Children is partnering with genomics telehealth technology company Genome Medical to advance precision medicine and genetic services offered at the Tampa, Fla.-based health system's new genomics institute.  

The Shriners Hospitals for Children Genomics Institute aims to help pediatric patients discover new genetic causes for their respective diseases and conditions to create more targeted and personalized therapies.

Shriners healthcare system will offer genetic sequencing to patients at its 22 hospitals and outpatient locations across North America as well as from its international network of outreach clinics. By partnering with Genome Medical, Shriners pediatric patients will also gain access to the telegenomics company's nationwide network of clinical genetic specialists, according to the Oct. 30 news release.

Shriners patients whose genetic sequencing screenings detect variations in medical actionable genes will be connected to Genome Medical to receive support and clinical guidance, such as virtual genetic counseling, arranging confirmatory genetic testing, referrals to medical specialist for follow-up care and coordinating genetic testing of family members.
