NIH allots $20M to add 5 innovation hubs to biomedical research network

Andrea Park -

The National Institutes of Health distributed a total of $20 million to five proof-of-concept biomedical innovation centers, expanding its Research Evaluation and Commercialization Hubs program.

The REACH program aims to accelerate the development of academic institutions' biomedical discoveries into devices, therapeutics and other tools to improve patient care and outcomes. To achieve this goal, the NIH matches member centers with federal and private sector partners who can offer resources and product development guidance.

The NIH's biomedical innovation network already includes three REACH hubs and three NIH Centers for Accelerated Innovations. The five new REACH hubs and their lead institutions are:

  • Kentucky Network for Innovation & Commercialization — University of Kentucky (Lexington)
  • Rutgers Optimizes Innovation program — Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (Newark, N.J.)
  • Midwest Biomedical Accelerator Consortium — University of Missouri (Columbia)
  • Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus REACH Hub
  • Washington Entrepreneurial REACH Hub — University of Washington (Seattle)
