New Northwestern center will study the science of scientific innovation

Andrea Park -

Evanston, Ill.-based Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management opened the Center for the Science of Science & Innovation, where researchers will use advanced analytics and artificial intelligence to detect patterns guiding scientific discovery.

The center is backed by a 2018 Minerva Grant from the U.S. Department of Defense and aims to identify the keys to using science for lasting societal impact. Researchers and experts from a variety of backgrounds to study the successes and failures of various careers, teams, collaborations, knowledge production, machine partnerships and more.

"Improving our scientific process requires that we first understand the patterns that drive it," said Dashun Wang, leader of CSSI and an associate professor of management and organizations at Kellogg. "Research conducted at the center will surface best practices, biases and behaviors that govern the way we pursue discovery and innovation, ultimately empowering us to create new knowledge more effectively."
