MedTech Innovator, a Los Angeles-based startup accelerator, named Forest Devices, a Pittsburgh-based medical technology company, the winner of its 2019 Global Competition.

Forest Devices is developing a portable device that uses machine learning and advanced monitoring technology to diagnose stroke subtypes such as large vessel occlusions, designed for use by first responders. The startup was awarded a $350,000 grand prize to fund its further development.

Runners-up in the competition, which initially began with a pool of nearly 800 early-stage medtech companies, included Canadian startup Flosonics Medical, San Francisco's Koya, Australia-based OncoRes Medical and Venari Medical, based in Ireland. They each received $25,000 prizes.

While the final stages of the competition were judged by a panel that included leaders from Olympus, Johnson & Johnson, Baxter International and Gore Innovation Center, the ultimate winner was decided by a live audience vote at The MedTech Conference on Sept. 24 in Boston, following presentations from each of the five finalist companies.
