LifeBridge Health's Department of Innovation and Research applies a community-centric approach to solving organizational challenges. Founded in 2016, the innovation department engages with external partners to expand access to care and improve value-based contracts.
Last spring, Baltimore-based LifeBridge Health launched its Virtual Hospital, which is a telehealth and communication hub that aims to increase patients' access to care providers. Virtual Hospital comprises a global clinical call center with staff based in Baltimore, Israel and the Philippines to accommodate for 24/7 virtual care services.
LifeBridge Health's innovation department also established the health system's bioincubator, which rents wet lab space to nearly a dozen biotechnology and medical device startups. To date, LifeBridge Health BioIncubator-affiliated companies have received more than 14 grants, secured more than 15 patents and achieved cumulative funding of more than $9 million. The department received the Healthcare Hero in Advancement and Innovation of Healthcare Award from the Daily Record newspaper for the project in 2019.
Over the past three years, LifeBridge Health's innovation department has been awarded an estimated $7 million in research funding. Most of the program's research studies are supported through cooperative groups, including the National Care Institute, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Southwest Oncology Group, as well as pharmaceutical entities.
