IT teams at large companies are shifting roles from support to innovation

In the past, organizations' tech teams were largely tasked with building and maintaining internal IT infrastructure, but now they are increasingly looked to for innovative ideas in product development, The Wall Street Journal reports.

At Visa, for example, every employee is allowed to spend 10 percent of their working hours developing new ideas to advance the company's strategic goals, and are then given the space to test their ideas at Visa hackathons and forums.

Among the 2,500 innovations developed by employees since the 10 percent program launched five years ago is Visa Transaction Controls, an interface that allows customers such as banks and small businesses to customize financial features in their proprietary apps.

Ernst & Young, meanwhile, allotted $100,000 to a team of Australian employees who designed an automated tool for cybersecurity management; the tool is currently under further development for eventual client use.

"It's more important than ever for us to make sure the right ideas are bubbling up from people on the ground," Jeff Wong, global chief innovation officer for Ernst & Young, told the Journal.
