Highmark Health innovation platform testing virtual cardiac rehab solution

Andrea Park -

Highmark Health's VITAL Innovation Platform, which conducts real-world testing of newly FDA-approved healthcare innovations to accelerate widespread adoption, is now testing a remote delivery system for cardiac rehabilitation services and management.

Moving Analytics' MOVN virtual solution provides personalized treatment plans and a care management team to patients with coronary disease, valve disease and heart failure, as well as those who have undergone a cardiac surgical procedure. The platform and its accompanying app combine clinical guidelines, behavioral science, health coaching and remote monitoring software to engage patients and improve outcomes.

Pittsburgh-based Highmark Health's VITAL program will test MOVN on a cohort of discharged Allegheny Health Network patients in need of cardiac rehab. Testing will continue through April 2021.

"By testing MOVN, we're studying a new cardiac rehabilitation delivery system that could significantly benefit our patients and the millions of Americans living with heart diseases," said Anil Singh, MD, executive medical director of clinical transformation at Highmark Health and system division director of critical care at Allegheny Health Network.

The VITAL Innovation Platform's "test-and-learn" approach provides payers and providers with the clinical evidence they need to increase coverage and usage, respectively, of early-stage health innovations with the potential to improve patient experience, care quality, healthcare costs and outcomes. Among several other past and ongoing projects, VITAL previously helped launch HeartFlow, which improves detection and treatment of coronary artery disease, and is in the process of testing Welldoc's BlueStar digital coaching app for diabetes patients.
