Andrea Park -

An anonymous Cleveland Clinic patient donated $2 million to endow a new position, chair for geriatric innovation, at the health system, with Ardeshir Hashmi, MD, selected as the first to hold the title, per a Feb. 18 news release.

The funding will advance research and education programs in Cleveland Clinic's Center for Geriatric Medicine and will also support other improvements to care quality and experience for the health system's geriatric patients.

"This gift will catalyze continued development of out-of-the-box-care solutions designed uniquely in partnership with our senior patients and their families," Dr. Hashmi said in a statement. "Our team in the Center for Geriatric Medicine will continue to collaborate with colleagues from our various institutes in the areas of technology, community, population health and clinical geriatrics."

Dr. Hashmi is the medical director of the Center for Geriatric Medicine. According to the release, one of Dr. Hashmi's own patients is the donor responsible for the creation of his new position.
