Cleveland Clinic Innovations, MedStar Health win 'cool idea' grants

Cleveland Clinic's innovation arm and Columbia, Md.-based MedStar Health are the joint winners of the Cool Idea Award: Healthcare Grant, digital manufacturer Protolabs announced Dec. 12.

The teams at Cleveland Clinic Innovations and MedStar Health will each receive manufacturing support and services from Protolabs to further develop their proposed devices.

MedStar Health created a "gravity feed syringe holder," which allows hands-free feeding in the neonatal intensive care unit. Cleveland Clinic Innovations' device was designed to form a seal around a surgically implanted feeding tube to eliminate leakage, reduce irritation and protect the stoma.

"We are proud that this award recognizes the innovative ideas our MedStar Health associates have to treat people and advance health," said Stephen Kinsey, director of MedStar Inventor Services. "The award also demonstrates the power of our partnerships with Cleveland Clinic Innovations and Protolabs, as we work together to transform ideas into clinical practice."

Both teams are using their grants to improve the design of their devices, with the help of 3D printing technology and manufacturing engineers' expertise.
