3 tips to engage physicians in innovation: HBR

Although healthcare is being flooded with artificial intelligence, data analytics and a slew of apps, it is unclear whether these solutions will solve healthcare challenges. One of the reasons is because clinicians are not always involved in the innovation processes, reports the Harvard Business Review.

Below are three ways to help physicians get more involved in innovation efforts:

1. Engage early and often: When digital health companies are creating new products, it is important to consult with physicians, and sometimes patients, early in the development stage. This will help companies know how a product will be integrated into clinical practice.

2. Obtain diverse perspectives: Chief medical officers and close friends who are also physicians are a great source for advice. But they are not the only useful sources. Health systems and digital health companies should seek the input of physicians from various backgrounds and specialties to gain knowledge of how products would treat diverse patient populations.

3. Be respectful of time and expertise: Because physicians are taking time away from patients to provide thoughtful insights, their time must be respected. Don't be late. Additionally, if funding is available, the physician should be compensated for their time and expertise.
