3 strategies for boosting collective intelligence, innovation

Together, the members of an organization have the potential to develop smarter, more inventive ideas than they could on their own — but only if company culture prioritizes collaboration and innovation.

Here, according to the Harvard Business Review, are three ways to foster collective innovation within an organization:

1. "Create tools that allow everyone to communicate strategically about innovation": Help team members from all levels and departments build strong arguments for their ideas by implementing a pre-pitch checklist, worksheet or other standardized tool that will enable them to think critically about their ideas before presenting them to the organization.

2. "Vet and refine ideas collectively and continuously": Rather than waiting for an annual all-team brainstorm session to roll around, invite employees to pitch their ideas to stakeholders throughout the year, then refine them as necessary before sending them over to senior leadership for final review.

3. "Bust through barriers that block innovation": All too often, employees must overcome multiple hurdles before leaders get on board with their ideas. Instead, according to HBR, the roles should be reversed, with leaders doing everything in their power to clear the way for employees to pursue innovation.
