South Dakota spends $500K on anti-meth digital campaign

Mackenzie Garrity -

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem launched the state's anti-meth campaign on Nov. 18, according to CNBC.

The campaign, with the slogan "Meth. We're on it," has sparked various reactions. However, Ms. Noem said that is exactly what the campaign is supposed to do.

"South Dakota's anti-meth campaign launch is sparking conversations around the state and the country," she wrote in an email to CNBC. "The mission of the campaign is to raise awareness — to get people talking about how they can be part of the solution and not just the problem. It is working."

The governor signed a $448,914 deal with Minneapolis-based ad agency Broadhead. Between September and May 2020, the ad agency will create "an effective South Dakota specific medical campaign that increases awareness of methamphetamine use and promotes resources prevention, treatment and recovery," according to the contract and cited by CNBC.

South Dakota will not spend more than $1.375 million on the campaign, which includes TV commercials, radio ads, billboards, social media and a website called Onmeth.com.
