How Mayo Clinic makes sure COVID-19 facts aren't lost in translation for non-English speakers

Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic serves a diverse patient population in Minnesota, including many patients who don't speak English.

The health system developed a tool for communicating important COVID-19 information with patients and community members who speak little or no English and have made the tool widely available. Mayo Clinic's community engagement researchers have worked with community members to identify their needs, questions and concerns and developed an icon graphic to show the difference between the most commonly available tests.

The team then translated the information into several languages, including Anuak, Arabic, Hmong, Karen, Karenni, Khmer, Spanish, Somali and Tagalog. Healthcare organizations can find a link to the graphics and flyers in multiple languages here.
