Number of hospitals using automation technologies triples since 2020: 4 survey insights

Jackie Drees -

Over the past year, the number of hospitals and health systems using automation technologies has tripled as organizations look to improve accuracy and reduce costs, according to a recent Healthcare Financial Management Association survey.

For the 2021 Health IT & Corporate Services survey, HFMA asked 112 provider CFOs and operations executives about their top priorities surrounding automation technologies and what initiatives they have rolled out.

Here are four survey insights, according to financial consultant Guidehouse's analysis of the report.

1. Half of executives said their hospitals are monitoring the use of automation technologies to improve accuracy and reduce costs. Of those hospitals, 38 percent are driving positive results from automation investments.

2. Thirty-seven percent of respondents listed intelligent automation, including robotic process automation, as their top technology enhancement priority over the next year. The next priorities were cybersecurity and enterprise resource planning at 30 percent and 27 percent, respectively.

3. When asked their top priority for improving cybersecurity, 43 percent of respondents said using modern security technology to monitor network and device abnormalities.

4. Despite being a top priority, 45 percent of providers still are more than two years away from deploying enterprise resource planning technology, with 15 percent of respondents not having any enterprise resource planning plans.
