Amazon Health AI exec who led HealthLake departs for health IT startup

Jean-Olivier Racine has left Amazon to join a health IT startup after serving in artificial intelligence and tech leadership roles for nearly 10 years. 

Five details:

  1. Mr. Racine was the head of health AI at Amazon Web Services and led HealthLake, Amazon Comprehend Medical and a variety of health services in development, according to a June 23 news release.

  2. He will join health IT company Outset Medical as chief technology officer. In his new role, Mr. Racine will oversee the strategic development of technology and data-driven innovation. 

  3. "Jean-Olivier's knowledge [and development of] services for the storage of health data, such as HealthLake, is critical to the innovation initiatives we intend to pursue in order to empower patients and healthcare providers," said Outset Medical CEO Leslie Trigg.

  4. His background in designing scalable cloud architectures for at-home health, such as Amazon Halo, and in using machine learning for retrieving health insights from data, such as Comprehend Medical, will be valuable in progressing the company's digital innovation goals, Ms. Trigg said.

  5. Mr. Racine is among several executives who have left Amazon's health venture for leadership roles in startups.
