Allentown, Pa.-based Lehigh Valley Health Network received the 2018 AMGA–Optum Award for Innovation in Population Health.

The award — which is sponsored by the AMGA and Optum, a national health services and innovation firm — recognizes pioneering work in population health.

Lehigh Valley Health Network's population health work is conducted through Populytics, its wholly owned regional population health management and analytics firm. Populytics utilizes a proprietary data analytics system to enhance quality and delivery or care as well as resource utilization at LVHN. Populytics' data-based insights helped the network reduce emergency department utilization by 7.3 percent in 2017, among other achievements.

"Populytics has created a system of clinically based predictive modeling, built on the Optum One population health analytics platform, to implement improvements in care," said Gregory G. Kile, chief insurance officer at LVHN as well as president and CEO of Populytics. "LVHN care coordination/population health teams use the data insights to prioritize outreach, tailor care for patients with chronic health conditions and to avert hospitalization and emergency department visits. The ultimate goal is better health, care and value for all patients."

The network received the award at the American Medical Group Association Annual Meeting in Phoenix, March 7 to March 10.
